Needlepunching Woven Upholstery Cloth
John Foster
Foster Needle Co., Inc.

I
For the mill producing the woven material, needlepunching the upholstery cloth provides the following advantages over non-needle-punched cloth:
  • Raw Material Cost Savings: Manufacturers can use fewer yarns per inch. During the needlepunching process the felting needles slowly work the fibers on the yarns. This creates a fuzz on the backside of the product. The needling action also shrinks the fabric in both the XMD and MD. As a result mills can use a far more open weave in the beginning, as after needlepunching the yarns thicken and move closer together.

  • Latex Cost Savings: One of the key advantages of needlepunching is the dense fuzz on the backside of the cloth. This fuzz naturally attracts the latex, which is put on after needling. As a result, less latex needs to be applied.

  • Higher Seam Strength: The needlepunching action interlocks the fibers of the woven cloth. This creates a much stronger fabric than otherwise possible.

Special felting needles are required to maximize the above benefits. Foster Needle has been selling into this industry for many years. We produce a wide variety of needles designed especially for every type of woven upholstery cloth. We have needles that are designed to needle just the fill yarns, or just the warp yarns. We have needles that are designed for specialty yarns lightweight fabrics. Want more information? Contact Foster Needle!
